Who is the cheapest big energy supplier in the UK now?
As we move through August 2026, the battle for the best fixed deal remains competitive, though clear leaders have emerged. British Gas is currently offering the lowest fixed rate among the giants, with a 15-month tariff at approximately £128 per month.
E.ON Next comes in second, offering the best value long fix at around £129 per month — and crucially that price is held for a full two years, through two winters.
Octopus Energy takes third place among the giants once their £50 switching credit is counted. EDF Energy fixes sit at around £134 per month, while OVO Energy and ScottishPower fixes are above the price cap altogether.
Currently, the Price Cap benchmark (Standard Variable Tariff) sits at £1,663 per year nationally following the July increase — a 13% rise. In the East Midlands, where we price our comparison, the capped variable rate works out at £1,611/year (£134/month). Analysts expect the Cap to rise again in October, to around £1,700, with Ofgem confirming the figure by 26 August. Switching to the cheapest fixed deals now (around £121-£128/mo) could save you between £75 and £160 a year against that capped rate.

Who They Are: A modern, app-based supplier founded by former tech executives. They own their own solar and wind farms and operate on a “direct-from-source” model.
Why Choose Them: They have taken the top spot outright this month, undercutting the entire market on price while offering a slick digital experience. Their app gives incredibly detailed insights into your usage, making them excellent for people who want to manage everything from their phone. They hold a 4.8 rating on Trustpilot.

Who They Are: A Leicester-based independent supplier — formerly known as Outfox The Market — that has consistently offered some of the cheapest fixed deals in the UK for the last five years. They focus heavily on keeping overheads low to pass savings to customers.
Why Choose Them: Their two-year “Fix’d Dual” is the cheapest way to lock a price in beyond next winter, and they are one of the best-rated suppliers in the country — 4.8 on Trustpilot and 2nd of 15 in the Citizens Advice service table.

Important — annual costs are not comparable with our figures from before July 2026. On 1 July 2026 Ofgem reduced its assumed typical usage from 2,700 kWh electricity and 11,500 kWh gas to 2,500 kWh and 9,500 kWh. Every annual figure on this page is therefore roughly 10% lower than the same tariff would have looked in June, for reasons that have nothing to do with price. Prices themselves went up: the Price Cap rose 13% on 1 July.

Do I have to pay exit fees if I switch?
It depends on the supplier. Most fixed tariffs now charge between £100 and £200 to leave early — including Octopus Energy, whose 12-month fix now carries a £100 exit fee having previously been free to leave. The exceptions this month are 100Green and ScottishPower’s exclusive Help Beat Cancer fix, both at £0, and any price-capped variable tariff, which you can always leave for nothing.
Which supplier has the best green credentials?
Ecotricity, Good Energy and 100Green are widely considered the “greenest” as they invest in new renewable generation — and 100Green is the only supplier offering green gas as well as green electricity. Ecotricity’s two-year fix at around £125/month is the cheapest green deal on the market right now. Among the major suppliers, Octopus Energy and E.ON Next both provide 100% renewable electricity as standard.
Do I need a smart meter to get the cheapest rates?
Often, yes. Many of the very cheapest deals, including tariffs from Fuse Energy and the tracker tariffs from EDF, So Energy and E.ON Next, require a smart meter to function. It allows suppliers to buy energy more efficiently and pass the savings on to you.

What happens if my energy supplier goes bust?
Your supply will never be cut off. The regulator, Ofgem, will automatically move you to a new “Supplier of Last Resort.” Your credit balance is protected, so you won’t lose any money you have built up in your account.
